Today, with the Choctawhatchee at 3.4 feet at Caryville (above I-10) and 6.6 feet down at Hwy 20 near Bruce, it is well within its banks and the bottomlands can easily be walked with no need for wading gear. "Flood stage," when extensive lowland flooding will occur, is 12 feet at Caryville. Moderate flooding generally occurs every winter/spring, and records show the river has exceeded 15 feet at least 10 times in the past 80 years, with the most recent high crest of 15.6 feet on April 4, 2005.
Two USGS river gauge sites have been added to the links section: this one for the Choctawhatchee near Caryville and this one farther downstream at the Hwy 20 bridge. The Caryville gauge should prove the most useful, as it provides forecast water levels and flooding informaton. The river will no doubt rise in the months ahead, depending on the amount of rainfall in the watershed.
