Some colorful characters from Vernon, a town of about 750 located just east of the Choctawhatchee on Holmes Creek (map) in Washington County, were featured in this 1982 documentary. Reviews are fairly positive here and here. Washington County has about 21,000 residents, for a population density of only 34 people per square mile. Leon County (home of the state capitol, Tallahassee) has 341 people per square mile, and Miami-Dade County has an astounding 977 people per square mile. Washington County remains a very rural part of Florida, as the official website attests: "Much of Washington County is uninhabited, with most of the population residing in or around Chipley, Caryville, Ebro, Sunny Hills, Vernon, Wausau, and other developments around the county's many lakes."
